Basketball Superstar Kobe Byrant Dead at Age 41 From Helicopter Crash

A call for a downed helicopter in Calabasas, California went out at 10:01 a.m. local time, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. People who were out biking near the crash spotted the incident and called it in.

Kobe was a HUGE basketball icon and was also a 2018 Oscar winner. He and 8 others died aboard his private helicopter when it crashed in Calabasas and started a fire. Among the deceased includes Bryant’s 13-year-old daughter Gianna who was also in the helicopter when it went down.
According to NBC Los Angeles:
“John Altobelli, the longtime baseball coach at Orange Coast College, was killed along with his wife and daughter in the helicopter crash Sunday that also took the lives of Kobe Bryant and the retired NBA superstar's daughter, Gianna. The 56-year-old Altobelli, his wife, Keri, and daughter, Alyssa, who was about 13 and played on the same basketball team as Bryant's daughter, were all killed, said Altobelli's younger brother, Tony Altobelli, the sports information director at the school. They were among the nine people aboard the helicopter when it crashed around 10 a.m. Sunday in Calabasas, about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.”  In a very unfortunate twist of fate, the father and his daughter were reportedly on their way to a travel basketball game when the helicopter crashed, according to ESPN.

The helicopter, a 1991 Sikorsky S-76B, departed John Wayne Airport in Orange County at 9:06 a.m. according to publicly available flight records. During his playing career, Bryant regularly took a helicopter to Lakers games from his Orange County home in the Newport Coast community.
White smoke from the helicopter was visible in the hours after the crash, and Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters were directed to the hillside to extinguish the fire, according to a California Highway Patrol officer. Bryant regularly traveled by helicopter during and after his NBA career, and a large crowd of fans quickly appeared upon the crash scene to pay their respects to their late idol.

The names of all nine people who were killed in a helicopter crash yesterday have been released:
-Kobe and Gianna Bryant
-John, Keri and Alyssa Altobelli
-Christina Mauser
-Sarah and Payton Chester
-Ara Zabayan
